Alongside the Burgundy Canal you will admire our marvellous landscape and discover small burgundian villages. From Beaune to Tonnerre you will cross land with a reputation gained over hundreds of years: the vallée de l'Ouche, the Abbey of la Bussière, Châteauneuf, Commarin, the Voûte of Pouilly, the Château of Eguilly, the Collégiale St Thibault, Semur, Bussy-Rabutin, Alésia, Flavigny sur Ozerain and its aniseed, the Abbey of Fontenay, Ancy le Franc, Buffon, the Renaissance Château of Tanlay, Tonnerre… and these places are only the most important!
Day 1: Arrival in Beaune
Participants arrive in the afternoon by their own means. Meeting with a Promenades en France representative who will give you instructions and the essentials to have a successful tour (road-book, maps, tourist information...). Evening meal and overnight stay in Beaune.
Day 2: Beaune – Bligny-sur-Ouche - 20km
In the morning there will be free time to visit the town of Beaune, its paved roads which take us back a few centuries; the Hospices and the Basilica, the cellar which shelter fantastic crus and many other lovely places. In the afternoon, a short route will take you from Beaune to Bligny-sur-Ouche. Evening meal and overnight stay in Bligny-sur-Ouche.
Day 3: Bligny-sur-Ouche - Pouilly-en-Auxois - 24km
Your route will take you to the Vallée de l’Ouche. You will arrive in the heart of a feudal area, with Chateauneuf-en-Auxois and Commarin, two imposing Châteaux. Evening meal and overnight stay in Pouilly-en-Auxois.
Day 4: Pouilly-en-Auxois - Montbard - 55km
Another stage rich with opportunities… Many visits are possible, alongside the canal or nearby: Bussy-Rabutin, Semur-en-Auxois, Flavigny sur Ozerain, Alésia,...You will continue your route following the waterside. At the end of the day if you don’t arrive too late, visit the Cistercian Abbey of Fontenay; a calm way to end the day nicely. Evening meal and overnight stay in Montbard.
Day 5: Montbard - Ancy-le-Franc - 32km
On your way to Ancy-le-Franc you will discover La Grande Forge de Buffon, and other hidden treasures: windmills, washhouses, churches, châteaux… in Aisy, Rougemont, Nuits… You might come across barges on the water. You can visit Ancy-le-Franc and its Château when you arrive in the village. Evening meal and overnight stay in Ancy-le-Franc.
Day 6: Ancy-le-Franc - Tonnerre - 22km
You will carry on following the towpaths alongside the Burgundy canal to reach your next stop. You will come to the beautiful Valley of the Abbey of Quincy and the Armançon Valley. You can explore the magnificent Renaissance Château of Tanlay on your way. When you get to Tonnerre, you can visit the town and its famous Fosse Dionne turned into a beautiful washhouse. Evening meal and overnight stay in Tonnerre.
Day 7: Departure
In the morning you will be able to spend free time in Tonnerre. Trip back to Beaune by train in the afternoon. End of our services.
An extra night in Beaune is possible.
Occasional cyclist:
You cycle once a month, you are not afraid of hills. You are ready to cycle between 25 and 40 km per day.
